I got the same answer as Hans.
And, indeed by the same method!

Just to show how simple-minded I am . . .
Spoiler
1 + 4 = 5 (no preceding number to influence outcome)
2 + 5 = 12 (2 + 5 = 7 + 5 = 12) where the 2nd 5 is the previous result
3 + 6 = 21 (3 + 6 = 9 + 12 = 21) where 12 is the previous result
8 + 11 = 38 (8 + 11 = 17 + 21 = 38) where 21 is the previous result

Bob, that is exactly the method I used to solve, but
Spoiler
in my books 8 + 11 = 19 (not 17) so your result should be 40 like I got!

Rudi
