Shark egg.
Either a Port Jackson shark or a Horn shark.
I found this article...and other finds indicate the shark species that produce this form of egg.

Bit of a lucky break...
I was searching Google pictures and used a variety of descriptive terms.

Hans's original image shows particles around the image, so I figured it was in water.
Searching for ocean and screw was natural but I only got a hit on a similar image when I added shark, which was my lucky break...

From your NatGeo page...another link to Insect eggs... Some must be the inspiration for many sci-fi movies, like life pods and cryogenic chambers, etc...
