3 simple puzzles

Post by StuartR »

These three simple puzzles appeared in an email advert I received from a company that sells consulting in problem solving.

Try to solve them quickly, the point of the exercise was to point out that sometimes you need to slow down and think, rather than give the obvious answer.
Email from Kepner-Tregoe wrote: • You are a participant in a race. You overtake the second person.

What position are you in?

• Mary´s Father has five daughters.

Their names are: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono and ??
What is the name of the fifth daughter?

• A cup and teapot set costs £110. The teapot costs £100 more than the cup.

How much is a cup?

Why are the answers given to these questions always the wrong ones?!

Its all in the way the question is asked...
Spoiler
Without a bit of thought, one might expect to be in first place if you overtake someone in second place...
If you miss the lead in to the Mary's Father question you might be looking for an unknown 5th name that starts with an "N"
Without a bit of additional calc, one might think the price of the cup is 10 pounds.

Rudi

I thought that a cup was 8 ounces, at least here in the states.

And what if you were to drink coffee from the same cup? Would it suddenly be transmuted into a coffee cup?

Quick puzzle:

If a teacup weighing 8 ounces transmutes into a coffee mug, how much does the coffee mug weight if it is not 5 pounds?
