Access laptop HDD via a.n.other lap/desktop

Post by VegasNath »

My laptop (HP Pavilion DV9000) has died, temporarilly at best.

My primary concern (for now) is accessing the data on the HDD which I believe is SATA 250gb.

I have been researching how I can achieve this and believe that I can access the HDD on a.n.other computer by using one of these?? Remove hdd from laptop, place in enclosure, plug into another computer via usb, voila ??

Am I understanding this correctly?

Yes, you need an enclosure that has internal connectors for a SATA drive (they usually have connectors for both SATA and USB).

There are lots of these available at Amazon for less money than the one you have linked to.

Take care, the enclosure you are looking at has a USB 3.0 interface. This is a relatively new interface not yet implemented widely on even recent computers. Unless you have access to a computer with built-in USB 3 capabilities, stick with USB 2 or SATA/eSATA devices.

Paul,

USB 3 is backward compatible with earlier USB connections, so the only issue with buying a USB 3 device is that it may be wasting some money.

Fingers in motion before brain put into gear!! You're right, of course. The device will operate at the (much) slower USB 2 speed, however. But yes it will work.

No... I think it has more to do with it being -10°F (-23°C) out there today!
