What causes mice to be come erratic?
I have 2 identical ergonomic mice. One works perfectly on this laptop; the other behaves erratically on my desktop system. The cursor disappears then reappears. Movement is jumpy instead of smooth. I replaced the batteries with fresh ones that I tested with a multimeter, but that didn't make any difference.

Suggestion, not solution, sorry.
On the desktop, go into the mouse settings and compare them with the mouse settings on the laptop.
At least you can eliminate different settings if they are the same and investigate further if they're not.

Re: Erratic Mouse
Is the mouse wired or wireless? If it's wireless then try moving the receiver to a different location.

Re: Erratic Mouse
Thank you for the responses, Gentlemen.
Yes, I cleaned the sensor when I replaced the batteries. Both are BT wireless devices. Only the one used on my desktop behaves erratically. It is the erratic nature that has me puzzled. If it would behave in the same manner all the time, I'd suspect hardware issues and replace it; but it will stop behaving erratically for no apparent reason and perform normally for a period of time then revert to its sketchy behavior.
Just now the cursor stopped appearing altogether. I power failed the system and restarted. The mouse is now working normally. I tried swapping the mice between machines, making all the uninstall and installation steps. The mouse behaving erratically works without issue on the laptop and vice versa.
My guess is that a replacement will fix the problem, but before doing that I thought I'd ask here in case someone had been through this and found a solution that didn't involve replacement.
Thanks again.

Re: Erratic Mouse
What happens if you swap them over? Does the erratic behaviour also swap over? If so the problem is located within the mouse and it's not a problem with the settings on your desktop machine.
It also means that if you are sure the sensor is completely clean then the fix will be to buy a new mouse.
