Secunia Personal Software Inspector 2.0 released

Post by HansV »

The Secunia PSI has been totally refurbished. The major new feature is the option to let Secunia PSI auto-update your software. And the interface is all new.

It's still free; available from PSI - Consumer - Products.
Best wishes,
Hans

I am a former user but encountered some issues so uninstalled it. Do you use this?

I don't leave it running all the time, but I start it once a week and let it run a scan. If it indicates that there are security updates for my software, I usually download and install them myself. After the scan I quit the program.

I'm not plan on letting the new version autoupdate my software (yet).
Best wishes,
Hans

good deal. I haven't used it on my 7 machine yet, but had issues on the XP so maybe I'll give it a try on this (since you use it lol) I manually installed as well...thanks :-)

Here is a screen shot of the Auto Update screen which does allow user interaction prior to any auto update. What do you think about this?

Edited: I went ahead and checked auto update and also checked the next box about user interaction. So far I just installed the updated version of Adobe Shockwave Player and it tries to sneak in Norton so you must uncheck that, otherwise it went as expected. All programs are up-to-date. This is most certainly a much better interface :clapping:

At the moment, I left Auto-Updates unchecked, but I might tick both check boxes and see how it goes.

I have Secunia PSI installed and permanently running on all the PCs in our house, and I install it on PCs that I fix up for others.

I have not upgraded to this new version yet, I think I will wait a few weeks and see how it works out for the rest of you

Just tried it out and found a flaw. It tells me:
"The version detected of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86) was 8.0.50727.762 while the latest version including one or more security fixes is 8.0.50727.4053."
BUT while it is true that my PC includes this package it is also true that the .762 to .4053 patch (Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update) is already installed on my PC, it is clearly listed in Add/Remove Programs and it is NOT offered to me by MS Update.

Secunia often detects older versions of software in other than the standard folders (C:\Program Folders and C:\Windows\System32) - take a good look where the older version is stored.

Secunia is referring to this file:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VC\msdia80.dll, version 8.0.50727.762
and having drilled down to that folder I find it also contains a file called:
msdia90.dll
which I guess will be the updated file.

So can I/should I remove the old msdia80.dll? Or will the sky fall?

I'd let it be, you never know if there is a program that expects that specific version to be available.

I thought you might advise that, I'll leave it alone.
