Is There a Way to Make BBCODE Display a Blank Space?

Post by BobH »

I've discovered (or rediscovered - it's an age thing; most of you wouldn't understand  ) that bbcode will allow a space between words but doesn't allow the insertion of blank spaces. I've run searches trying to find a tag or some way to do so, but hve come up empty. It might be that I don't know how to phrase a seach argument.

Am I trying to do the impossible?

It's a general property of HTML that multiple spaces are ignored.

The "tab" tags [tab][/tab] insert 4 non-breaking spaces into the text:
Eileen's[tab][/tab]Lounge becomes Eileen's    Lounge when posted.

Text between [code] and [/code] tags is rendered in a fixed-width font, with spacing as entered:

Code: Select all

One One
  Two Two
    Three Three
      Four Four

Best wishes,

Thanks, Hans.

I can understand why HTML might strip consecutive spaces but i'm surprised to learn that no way exists to control that behavior with a tag. But, then, I'm not as quick as I once was even if you give me enough time. :hairout:

And I'm not entirely sure it's just HTML because I've seen other applications that don't allow multiple spaces.

I have a tab hotkey setup         so I can         insert extra spaces in         Lounge posts when I desire to do so.

Thanks.

I put some tabs in my signature ASCII art.

since this site has the best SEO for the query, "tab space BBcode," I have created this account. Not all BBcode renderers support the [\tab][/tab] syntax. I copy/paste 3 "Braille blank pattern1"s into the beginning of my paragraph, and since browsers do not recognize it as whitespace, it looks like a tabspace. the only disadvantage is screen-reader accessibility.

Hello tab⠀space⠀answer (what was wrong with "SpaceCadet"?) and may I be the first to welcome you.
I have a mild interest in computing for blind people that goes back about thirty years.
That said, I am fully-sighted - as much as a 78-year old book-reader can be.

Spacing in web pages is a problem for sighted people too. I now live in a remote settlement and more than ever rely on on-line shopping sites. Far too many web pages act in a confusing manner with spaces. One example: Canadian postal codes take the form

Code: Select all

<letter><digit><letter><space><digit><letter><digit>
My postal code is "A0C 1B0"
But online sites will often either
(a) Ignore my space and tell me that "A0C1B" is not a valid postal code or
(b) Insist that I enter the data as "A0C1B0" or
(c) lodge some other objection.

Ordering stuff online becomes a game between me and the web site as to how to get a valid postal code onto the order form.
Cheers, Chris
