On YouTube, the characters in the video look fuzzy to me (Fa

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I’m using FastStone 6.9 to capture videos from my screen but the output on YouTube is funny.
I’m not sure what to change and wonder if VideoLoungers can offer suggestions/experiments.

My computer monitor is a DELL, and in regular use I have it set at 1280x1024, but to make recordings I set it at 800x600 – the maximum (minimum?) possible.

I start recording work on an Excel worksheet, stop recording, and upload the video to YouTube.
Here is an example:(Link updated; my apologies) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKaylEdBih8

No matter whether I set my monitor to 1280x1024 or at the recorded 800x600, the characters in the video look fuzzy to me, either in the regular YouTube window or in the Full-Screen mode.

Is this a direct result of limitations in YouTube’s playback, or is there some magic setting I should know about?

As an experiment I uploaded the video to http://www.chrisgreaves.com/Downloads/Zoomp4.wmv, and when I use that link the appearance is much improved.

Same video, the second instance being viewed through a player on my computer.

Thanks for any advice you can offer

When you upload to YouTube, the video will be compressed to keep down the file size; this results in loss of quality. The video on your own website is the original, uncompressed version.
Best wishes,
Hans

Ok, Thanks, Hans, for this explanation.
Since I want to promote on YouTube I'll drop a link to a "better quality video", pointing to my web site, in the YouTube description.

Your YouTube link above is meaningless since it says the video has been removed by the user with no notes that I can see.

My apolgies Al (and all others).
I'm not having a good day.
After Hans's response I went back and diddled then, this afternoon cleaned up my account and threw out 'the trash".
I've re-hooked the link in the original post.

I am now providing users (on my web pages) with a link to the YouTube version of each video, and a High Quality link to the original stored on my servers.
