Don't you simply have to give Google lots of $, £, ¥, etc?

That was indeed my impression.
That, or else you have to spend an hour or so each day responding to all those well-meaning folks who believe that my cruddy web site (and I wrote my own web-compiler, too; WHAT an insult!) is the reason that business were not beating a path to my door, and all the time I thought it was because I had pulled the plug on my abysmally poor marketing skills when I quit the field ten years ago!

The alternative to throwing $ at Google seems to be getting a few of one's web pages linked to from other popular web sites.

Cheers

I already use Google adds but this can be costly, I am a smaller business guy and trying to get at least on the first page. My skills with websites are limited, so I was hoping to find a website SEO checker with some additional tools to assist me, any suggestions, assistance or thoughts is greatly appreciated.

There are companies which specialise in SEO for websites, but they also cost $lots.
(But maybe not so many $lots as does Google.)

I think the most common thing is to not use Google since this will feed you more of what you already searched for, and use common sense when creating the web page. Even the layout is important such as not using tables but using HTML and CSS, all required attributes and dividing pages into logical sections. It is such fun to tweak a page and see it score well.
An alternative to Google is DuckDuckGo. They have gotten so good and will not save the results so you can search again for your own webpages from scratch.
