Cookies managenent: Can web pages be trusted?

Post by ChrisGreaves »

There is nothing special about this web page; like most people I may or may not choose "Manage Cookies" and opt for only "essential" cookies, but of course, what they think is essential may not agree with my thoughts.
Then I go ahead and read the web page, click on diversionary links.
Just like you, right?

But how do I know that the web designer actually wrote program code behind those buttons?

Other web designers who can read java, JavaScript, html and the like could easily see if there was anything there, but you average user  just chooses and clicks and trusts that the web page designer can be trusted.

I am paranoid and suppose that scam-sites will harvest every scrap of data that they can, and the blazes with me and my old-fashioned love of (some specific) privacy.

I am today wondering why I bother to waste another ten seconds clicking away at cookie-management that I don't believe.
Cheers, Chris

Alternatively, go for the simple option and:
1) Always use Firefox.
2) Add uBlock Origin then:
i) click on the uBlock Origin icon that's on the FF toolbar
ii) in the drop down that appears click on the three cog-wheel icon
iii) a new tab opens, the uBlock Dashboard, which displays a myriad of settings, at the top, click where it says 'Filter lists'
iv) scroll down to find the section headed 'Cookie notices' and expand it if necessary
v) tick both of the options
vi) close the Dashboard tab
3) Job done, enjoy browsing with a much reduced number of interruptions to deal with cookies

The DuckDuckGo browser has an option to automatically reject cookie requests

Click the "UPDATE NOW" button
Thanks Ken; as you can guess I have done that. So in theory now I won't be annoyed by the pop=ups for "Manage Cookies".
But where does that leave me?

I suspect that the majority of web sites honour the Manage Cookies settings, but a plain user like me has no way of knowing, really, what effect my selection has.
Correct?
Cheers, Chris

Thank you Stuart; I am an old fart who is totally out-of-touch. Well not quite so totally now.
I have been using the DuckDuckGo search engine for a few years but had not realized that there was a DuckDuckBrowser.
I am using that browser now.

As per my closing comment to Ken, above, I suspect that now DuckDuckGo browser is blocking all 3rd-party cookies before they escape from my router (almost!).
I have imported bookmarks and login-cookies from Firexox (300+ bookmarks, 20 login cookies - and that seems a lot!).
Thanks again, Chris
