Chris,

If you have some further guidance on this I'm sure it will contribute to solving the original question.

In order to confirm (and to put other minds at rest), I managed to download the database update file (4 VPS update version 4.8.0) from the the URL mentioned earlier. This is 50.3MB, not 38MB as shown. After installing, my Avast 4.8 Home Edition shows "Current version of virus database: 120402-1, 02-04-12". So I feel confident that at least for this version, updating of the database is still possible.

I believe that Avast is no longer updating the program files; mine shows Build Sep2009 (4.8.1368) (even though the source website referred to earlier shows that latest release as "Avast Free AntiVirus 4.8.1367 26 November, 2009". Again I cannot comment on the version for Windows2000, that is shown as Avast Free Antivirus 6.0.1270 23 August, 2011. I assume this would require the version 5 & 6 & 7 series VPS update.

Hope this helps...

Chris

In case there is still interest in finding free AV for legacy systems, I've just come across ClamWin Free Antivirus. This is advertised as being for Microsoft Windows 7 / Vista / XP / Me / 2000 / 98 and Windows Server 2008 and 2003.

I have no experience of this product.

ClamWin does support Windows 2000, but as stuck mentioned in the very first post in this thread, it doesn't have a runtime component - you can only scan on demand.
Best wishes,
Hans
