Malwarebytes 3.0

Post by Rudi »

Malwarebytes 3.0 available.

The new version is a trail version for 14 days, but after the expiry it defaults back to a "disinfectant" as the usual older free versions were.

See here for the launch and info about the product
See here for the downloads

Thanks, Rudi!

(I dislike that they don't provide an option to install the free version any more, but force you to install the trial version. But it does scan much faste, so that's good.)
Best wishes,
Hans

Once installed, you may disable the trial and revert to the free version.

Do they still have a portable version? It is very useful to have anti-malware software that can be run without needing to be installed.

I DL and tried to install ver.3.0 but it kept hanging up with a Runtime Error.
Capture90.JPG
Checking in to Malwarebytes I found one instance of this error happening.
The fix was to go into the Exclusions folder\tab and if there were no exclusions listed, then just add a file ( any old file ) to the list, then retry the install.
This worked fine and after the install was finished, go back and take the exclusion out.

All was well and the scan ran fine.
Just in case anyone else runs into this problem.

That's weird - I didn't (and don't) have any exclusions, and yet version 3.0 installed and ran without problems...

Hans

Strange I'm sure, but you know me, Hans, I DO get my share of unusual events.

My installation and scan also went without a hitch.
Anyways, TX for posting the workaround Bob. Handy to know if one did run into that issue!

I had exactly the same problem as Bob (Runtime Error, External Exception) and I too had NO exclusions. Further digging revealed a Malwarebytes solution by using the MBAM Clean Removal tool. Simply make sure that you download, save and run the tool which is appropriate to your current installation (paid or free).

I ran (as administrator) the mbam-clean.exe tool, performed a restart, and installed the latest version of Malwarebytes without incident. Hope this helps anyone else who may have this same problem. Apparently (according to a Google search), this is not an uncommon error when installing updated versions of Malwarebytes.

Thanks for the link to the Clean Removal tool - that should be useful to others installing the new version.

I elected to go right to the use of the clean tool and installed the 3.0.4.1269 version following all the suggestions outlined in your links. Everything worked well. Deactivated the Premium Trial version, rebooted and started the scan. Took only 1:43 to scan 424,930 objects. All is well.

Thanks John !

Bob

Which scan did you use Bob? My "Threat Scan" takes a considerable length of time.

Ran the Threat Scan for the 1:43 time. Just ran it again and it took 2 seconds less.

It was only checking the files on the system drive.

That's weird. I'm currently running a scan and after approximately 53,000 items, I'm already at over 19 minutes. This is an older machine, but I don't think that would account for such a difference.

Maybe it's time to check the health of the hard drive. My last disk failure started with disk operations taking a long time to run with many retries. :xsad:

That's always a possibility I suppose. I'll look into that. Thanks for the suggestion.

Is it me, or is it a "step up" in that the free version doesn't allow updates?

In the previous version I ran (mbam-setup-2.1.6.1022 ?) I could initiate Updates, but this version (3.0) issues pop-ups telling me that my database is out of date, but won't initiate a d/l when I choose (I forget the button that became available when I signed in to WiFi half an hour ago).

I apologise for sounding so vague. No doubt the warning will come up next time I reboot with WiFi at which time I will capture the screen.
