I have a few hundred contacts in OL 2010 which I use mostly for easy dialing on my smartphone. Most DO NOT have a company name and about 25% DO have something in the company name field.
The default condition for Outlook had them sorted alphabetically, first for those with no company and at the bottom, alphabetically were those with a company name. That isn't what I wanted. I prefer the entire list be sorted by name only.
Not sure how I did it but I think it was here in this graphic. After just a couple of days use, I am acclimating pretty well to this beast I've avoided for so many years!

Click the Group By button and clear the check box marked "Automatically group according to arrangement"
