Yesterday we discovered what our problem was with the "missing" Contacts. Our fault entirely, of our 1594 contacts a number have been Categorised as Clients - then a Clients folder was created and those client contacts copied to it. We under the impression that any changes in to a contact in the client folder would also be reflected in the contacts folder. Subsequently names etc were added to the clients folder - but we didn't notice that those additions weren't also being put into the Contacts folder! So that's why they didn't appear in contacts. All of the additions have now been added to the Contacts folder and the client folder has been deleted. In future we will filter by category when needed. Thanks for helping us.
