New PCs but nominally the same set up as previously, i.e. XP + Outlook 2007. Used to be able to select a message in the list, right click Categorize and select the one you wanted. Now it gives an error, 'can't open item'.
However if you explicitly open the message you can then apply a category using the button on the ribbon.
Any clues?

Things to try:
1) Are you on Microsoft Exchange? If so:
- Select Tools | Account Settings...
- Activate the E-mail tab.
- Select the Exchange account.
- Click Change...
- Clear the "Use Cached Exchange Mode" check box.
- Click OK.
- Quit and restart Outlook.
2) Disable add-ins:
- Select Tools | Trust Center...
- Click Add-Ins.
- Select "COM Add-Ins" from the Manage dropdown, then click Go...
- See if there are add-ins (other than Microsoft Exchange) that you could disable.
- Click OK.

Re: can't categorize a message unless messages is open
Hmm, on my PC, which behaves as expected, used cached mode is ticked. On the irritating PCs it is also ticked but unticking it and restarting Outlook fixed the problem.
Out of curiosity I then reticked the box and restarted and found categorising worked as expected - for about 5 mins, where upon it stopped working again.
I'm in the process of comparing the list of COM add-ins on my PC with that on the new machines.
Meanwhile thanks Hans,
Ken

Did clearing the "Use Cached Exchange Mode" check box also solve the problem with the last view not being preserved?
Best wishes,
Hans
