Firefox 106 landed on my machine today

Post by stuck »

The big thing in FF 106 seems to be the FF View tab. I've no idea what it does, I removed it almost immediately, when the setup process started going on about phones so I knew it was going to be pointless for me and my ancient Nokia.

Two other changes (see Version 106.0, first offered to Release channel users on October 18, 2022):
  • It is now possible to edit PDFs: including writing text, drawing, and adding signatures.
  • Setting Firefox as your default browser now also makes it the default PDF application on Windows systems.
Not everyone will like the latter point!
Best wishes,
Hans

:sigh: No, they won't. Something else I'll be to undoing.

I installed Firefox 106 and Foxit Reader is still my default PDF app. I guess it only applies when you SET Firefox as default browser. It already was for me.
Best wishes,
Hans

That does seem to be the case, FF was already my default browser and my default PDF reader hasn't changed with this FF update.

I was flashed the question "would I like a colour' for something (I was busy and didn't really pay enough attention) , I boldly chose orange. Mistake. Took me a little while to find that setting but now the chrome is white in spite of choosing black. Sigh. Will check more tomorrow. I like treasure hunts and discoveries.

The default PDF, well. Many of my students open PDF's with the built-in previewer (mistake) but once they have Adobe Reader things are better. I can't recommend Foxit or others since they also need to open protected files.
I am amazed at the suggestion to make it the default PDF reader.
I think the majority of their users is computer savvier than most. They know about other readers and what extras they have to offer. So they would not want this.

So, who would want FF as the default PDF reader? Maybe those who don't have access to alternatives? But the native 'reader' such as the Mac Previewer (drama πŸ™„) should still be accessible to them. So, why in the world...?

In Tools > Settings > General, you can choose between Automatic, Light and Dark. Does that help?

Really? Foxit handles all the PDFs I used when I was working, protected or not and including digitally signed (created with Adobe Acrobat Pro) ones.

Thanks, that's what I tried last night but it didn't help (it didn't affect the chrome at all). I decided to not be bovvvered or look bovvvered and went to bed. This morning I had to activate the black theme πŸ™„ Oh well.

Does it handle files that are protected with a personal certificate? That might be helpful although most are using Adobe software anyway and use it to create their ID anyway. At the time it didn't work with Foxit but that was a very long time ago and I never looked back after Acrobat.

I don't know but if you have such a PDF why not just try it?

I use Foxit PDF Editor and it allows me to protect a document with a certificate. I would be very surprised if their reader wouldn't be able to open this document!

Thank you Stuart!
I haven't used it for ages and since I need Adobe software 'all the time' I never looked back. It's good to know though!
