Update: Firefox 89.0 released

Post by HansV »

See Version 89.0, first offered to Release channel users on June 1, 2021.

The browser has received a visual overhaul.

Hans

My Bookmarks menu(s) no longer fit(s) vertically on my screen. Is there any way to reduce the inter-line spacing, does anyone know?
I never needed to scroll the menu upwards or downwards in 88.0.1 and before.

I don't know of a specific setting for the bookmarks menu.

The new interface is called Proton. In about:config, there are a few settings related to it, listed as browser.proton.nnn. The main one is browser.proton.enabled. If you set this to False and restart Firefox, you should have the old interface back - for now. No idea what will happen in the future.

Thanks, Hans.
Changing browser.proton.enabled from true to false and restarting Firefox didn't do anything to the vertically-expanded Bookmarks entries.
However changing browser.proton.contextmenus.enabled from true to false and restarting Firefox restored the Bookmarks entries vertical spacing to its previous condition.

Let's hope they sort this particular feature out 'officially'!

I also find it slightly irritating that the title bar doesn't use the accent color set in Windows. And that the difference between the title bar when Firefox is active and when it is not the active application is so subtle that it is hardly noticeable.

I agree - the "top three lines" (with the Menu Bar active) are quite washed out.
About the only bit of progress is that the rectangular box surrounding the active Tab has curved corners!
Not quite Proton, more Neutron.

The technical term for these sort of changes is 'fangelation'.

For those of you who had modified their Firefox to have tabs shown below the bookmarks toolbar and came unstuck like me, this may be because you installed a modified css. (I ended up with my tabs at the bottom of the screen, and only the active one visible...)

To resolve:
Quit Firefox
Navigate to your Firefox profile:
    %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
and rename/move/delete the Chrome folder.

And for those of you who want better clarity of which is the active tab, you could do worse than visit AddOn Genie and try ColorfulTabs.
Leif.

My wife's preferred browser is FF. She does not like change PERIOD, NEVER, EVER likes change. No matter whether it is software or hardware! However, I will try to stay on topic.

Your observation of the changes to the title bar and John’s comment of “washed-out” areas is making her very upset. Not at you, but the “change-makers”. And of course it is my duty to fix it. As a dedicated Chrome user, I now find myself having to dig into FF settings to see how to fix the ……. Problem. If you good folks arrive at a solution I will be forever in your debt.

Bob

Have you tried changing the browser.proton.nnn settings in about:config?

Thanks Hans, I will investigate and report back. I will play with the settings on my version of FF on my PC before attempting changes on her PC. Tis call “safety-first”!

No, but it does 'fix' the light colour and expanded spacing of the menu bar, tabs and address bar.

Yes, so by setting both browser.proton.enabled AND browser.proton.contextmenus.enabled to FALSE you can go back to more or less how it looked before they 'improved' things'.
