I have never liked the way an icon dragged from the IE address bar to the desktop becomes a "pinned website". It will always open in a new instance of IE, with home page, addons etc. disabled. I just learned that it is possible to create a regular .url shortcut by holding down Shift when you drag the favicon from IE. I also learned in this article of a little registry hack (downloadable from page) that will convert existing pinned website shortcuts to normal URL shortcuts. Worked nicely for me.
