Zipping a Secured database

Post by JohnH »

I have been puzzled today, and I think I have worked out what is going on.

If you zip a mdb file that uses Access Security, the resulting zip file is no smaller than the original.

Presumably the zip program cannot get in to do what it needs to make any compression.

I initially did this with Windows built in zip capacity, then I downloaded and tried with PeaZip as suggested in a recent Windows 7 thread.
Regards

John

This is probably because the access security uses some kind of encryption. Encrypted data no longer has the kinds of data patterns that enable it to be compressed.

Thanks for the heads up. Same holds for WinZip.
Best wishes,
