Huh? Did the PPT team forget about double clicking?

Post by Rudi »

The quote below is taken from an article published today by the PowerPoint Team on Microsoft's PowerPoint Blog, here...

What I find VERY surprising is that it seems (as indicated by the italicized portion of the quote below) that they have completely overlooked the option to double click the format painter button to apply formatting repetitively.

Just an interesting observation and a seemingly strange error on a blog post?!
Copy and paste formatting

If you want to format an object to look just like another object without reapplying all of the formatting by hand, use the formatting clipboard. Select the object whose formatting you want to copy and press Ctrl+Shift+C. Then, select the objects that you want to have the same formatting and press Ctrl+Shift+V to paste the formatting. This also works on the slide thumbnails if you have a slide background or theme that you want to copy from slide to slide.

This keyboard shortcut makes use of the Format Painter feature, which also allows you to copy formatting from one shape to another. The keyboard shortcut is a good one to remember since it packs even more power—once you’ve copied the formatting, you can paste the formatting onto as many shapes as you like without having to copy it again.

There is a difference though: the Format Painter will be de-selected the moment you do something else such as typing text. When you press Ctrl+Shift+C, the formatting will remain on the formatting clipboard even if you perform other actions in between.
Best wishes,
Hans

OK; in that context they're forgiven...

I actually did learn this shortcut only now.
Never knew of CTRL+SHIFT+C/V.

Cheers

It works in Word too (but not in Excel).

I tried it in both Word and Excel (and it works in Excel for me).

Excel sounds "ding" at me when I press Ctrl+Shift+C or Ctrl+Shift+V, and I can't remember ever having been able to use these shortcuts in Excel (unless I assigned an action to them myself).
Best wishes,
Hans

Control-Shift-C just dings for me on Excel 2013 too.
I use this feature regularly on Word 2013, it's extremely useful.

Ah, you both are probably trying it on cells and text. As stated in the first sentence of the quote above, it seems the primary use for CTRL+SHIFT+C/V is for objects (or more specifically; Shapes and Pictures). In Excel it works great on shapes (but only shapes/pictures, not charts or smartart unfortunately). It seems this feature has more scope in Word and PPT as it works on just about anything there, but in Excel you need a shape/picture selected to copy and then duplicated the formatting to other shapes/pictures.

Ah OK - learned something new, so thanks!

I use Ctrl+Shift+C / Ctrl+Shift+V frequently on text in Word, so I did indeed try to use it on cells in Excel.
Best wishes,
Hans

Hans summarized my situation perfectly. I use this all the time on text in Word, so tried it on a cell in Excel. I rarely use shapes or pictures in Excel.
