Excel2003 - Displaying hours greater than 23:59

Post by ChrisGreaves »

The attached workbook holds two "time" columns.
ColumnA is raw data; it shows the length of a sequence of audio tracks - almost eight minutes for the preface and introduction, then ranging from 30 to 60 minutes for each chapter thereafter.

ColumnB is the cumulative time - the running total of audio recorded, and of course it rises by 30 to 60 minutes for each chapter.

To my horror my cumulative time dropped to zero a few days ago.

Because ColumnB is formatted as hh:mm:ss which I thought would roll on to 23 hh and then to 24 hh, 25 hh, 26 hh, so that I could brag that "I have produced twenty-six hours of audio to date".

I can put in some calculations in ColumnC - multiply ColumnB by 24 to get days and fractions of a day so that I can brag that "I have produced twenty-six point two-oh-nine-four-four hours of audio to date", but I am curious ...

Is there a way with formatting alone
- no fancy functions or auxiliary calculations - to cause ColumnB to display as (for example) "26:07:31"?
Thanks
Chris

Apply the custom number format [hh]:mm:ss to column B. The [] instruct Excel to display the hours as cumulative time instead of clock time.

Now how, in the name of all that is Binary, was i supposed to know that? They never mentioned that back in programming school, just "don't turn over the corners of your cards".
Thanks Hans. :clapping: :hairout: :clapping: :hairout:

It also works for minutes and seconds: the custom format [m]:ss or [mm]:ss will display 1:23:45 as 83:45, and the custom format [s] or [ss] will display it as 5025.
Best wishes,
Hans

... will display 1:23:45 as 83:45,
This too is good.
Do you go as far down as String Theory?(1)
Thanks
Chris
(1) I do an awful lot of string-processing. C

Be careful! String theory will cause your strings to be rolled up tightly in the 10th dimension!

Didn't they sing duets back in the 60s and 70s?

Oh come ON Hans, you can stray further off-topic than that!
What's wrong with "Not dimension the Byrds"? At least then we could segue into nested formats, formats of nests, and then Graeme or Stuck could join in :hugs:
Cheers

Don't think I've got any photos of nests.
