I found this web page that has a macro that worked first time! No tweaking required.
It will give you a choice between
(a) listing used/unused custom number formats and
(b) deleting orphaned custom number formats.
Seemed to work well for me

I've been playing around and making lots of mistakes with number formats in Excel 2000. (Currency Symbols)
