Error message The Application Virtualization Client could no

Post by ABabeNChrist »

I have a friend that is trying to open one of my xlsm workbook using Office 2010. But when attempting to open the workbook all he gets is an error message.
“The Application Virtualization Client could not launch the application you requested. The requested operation requires elevation.” Error code
He use to have Office 2007 then he installed 2010. I first though the problem could be from both Offices installed together. So I had him uninstall all the offices and then re-install only Office 2010. The problem seems to still exist.

Upon internet searching I found this link. Also noted he is using Windows XP
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Fo ... m=mdopappv
that mentions using PowerShell and run

Code: Select all

Repair-AppvClientPackage -Name *Office*
I thought I would come here and ask first

Windows XP? :flee:

XP isn't safe to use anymore. The user should upgrade to Windows 7 or later as soon as possible!
Best wishes,
Hans

I read a suggestion to run Excel as Administrator. It needs to be done only once, after that, Excel should start normally.

"Run as Administrator" is easy in Windows Vista and later, but unfortunately it's more complicated in Windows XP - you need to provide the Admin password. See To start a program as an administrator.
Best wishes,
Hans

Sorry a little confused here. The link mentions “In Windows Explorer, click the program executable file that you want to open” does this mean Excel? . Also we attempted using Start/Programs/Microsoft Office/Excel then holding the Shift key while right clicking and then selecting RunAs/The following user/User name and Password, but only recived an error “Service cannot be started”

I have never used App-V, but if it is anything like other virtual drives or environments, then App-V should be opened first. App-V is a virtual environment in which the Office applications run. If App-V is not running, Excel or the other Office apps cannot run either.

Your friend will probably keep on experiencing problems if he sticks to Windows XP...

Hi,

See this page for details, though it might be overkill!
Personally, like Hans said...it might be best to get your friend to upgrade the OS first before attempting to really solve this App-V issue!

Rudi

Thanks Rudi, i agree with upgrading to a newer version of Windows. His main concern was an old program that loves and has been using for many years would most likely be lost.

It could be possible that this program can be installed on Win 7 and run in compatibility mode. I can't see why that should not work?

Where can I find any specifics about this ? The mere exclamation 'unsafe' I do not consider a sound argument.

Just google it and you'll find plenty of advice from reputable sources that back up this statement.

I find in interesting that you are so staunch in defending an outdated* OS; albeit that it served us admirably for a good number of years. Until Win 7 came about, Win XP was my absolute favourite OS and I recall creating several good presentations (in it's early years) that I promoted to our clients whilst working for a partner company of Microsoft here in RSA.

* That's the only specific I need.

@Rudy,

Please read carefully/meticulously; I am not defending anything: you can't find that anywhere in my posts; I am merely asking for specific arguments.
I don't like statements without arguments.

I understand.

How about this report (from the proverbial horses mouth) containing the below quote, that supports the original claim that XP is not safe to use anymore?
If you continue to use Windows XP now that support has ended, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Internet Explorer 8 is also no longer supported, so if your Windows XP PC is connected to the Internet and you use Internet Explorer 8 to surf the web, you might be exposing your PC to additional threats. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter more apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.
Also see this article from Microsoft too: Potential risks of staying with Windows XP

Rudi

1. The first one is on internet Explorer, not on XP
2. The second contains no real/specific argument at all "might/potential" <> specific.
3. The source isn't independent.

I conclude that MS's (dis)claim cannot be substantiated.
