Thumbnails on left

Over the last two days, every time I open a document in Word 2003, I get a pane on the left hand side with thumbnails representing the pages. I close it by grabbing the margin between it and the page and pushing it all the way to the left until it disappears. However, I would prefer for it to not show up to begin with, or for documents to open up with the document map instead. How can I achieve this?

Select View and click Thumbnails to turn it off.
