Format can't be read

Post by Dave Davison »

I have copied a free online e-book into a Word document on my computer running windows 7 which I would like to copy to my old laptop running XP so I can read it in the comfort of my lounge rather than in the computer room. I copied the said document on to a thumb drive, plugged it into the laptop and copied it to the HD BUT it changes format and can't be read. Does this suggest Word in XP is not compatible with that on W7? If so, is there a way round this glitch please?

If your laptop has an older version of Microsoft Office than the 2007 version that you use on your main computer, it may not be able to open .docx documents.

Try the following:
- Open the document on your main computer.
- Click the Office button in the upper left corner, then select Save As.
- Select 'Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)' from the 'Save as type' dropdown.
- Specify a new name if you wish (this is not essential).
- Click Save.

Then transfer the newly saved document to the laptop.
Best wishes,
Hans
