Table of content Problem....

Post by vaxo »

Hello friends, I have a large report with a table of content. Some heading content is repeated in different pages but in the table of content I need to show only once, but when I updated TOC this content(headings) are repeated many times. Can I make this so that with unique content to be shown only once???

You have two options:

1) Use a different (non-heading) style for the repeated content.

2) Create a Table of Contents from entries marked by a TC field - this is more work.
Best wishes,
Hans

Why are you repeating the Headings?

Consider using the StyleRef field instead.

Perhaps it'd be better to use Charles Kenyon's suggestion.

Are you trying to increment the numbering or just reflect the same numbering?
Assuming the first, the StyleRef field should be good.
Here is a reference: http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/fi ... m#STYLEREF\\
Note that this field does not automatically update when in the body of a document. If placed in a header, though, it does. Putting it the header rather than in the body is likely a good idea any way.

Hans, you left me in the dust long ago as far as Word expertise. Some stuff I know pretty well, though.

Yes, i am trying to reflect the same number. And It is not placed in the header but in body text. (this is the audit report standard) is there any way??

Yes, using the StyleRef field. Look at the link.
If you need to refer to a heading that will skip an intervening one, use a Cross-Reference field instead. StyleRef only refers to the closest thing in the style.

Again, for your final report you need a way of updating these fields.
Ctrl+A followed by F9 will do it, usually. Print Preview might, as well. Different fields update differently and it will depend on user settings. Paul Edstein knows this stuff a LOT better than I do.

Yes, but in need to look like the same... The only difference would be (continued) text at the end of heading...

Ok, If there is no way for doing this, I would manually delete in Toc field unwanted fields..

You can certainly format the fields to look the same. Use character styles to format the fields. Those can have formatting that matches the original style but is not a paragraph style.
Use CHARFORMAT switches in the fields rather than the default MERGEFORMAT.
