Word2003 - splitting hyperlinks.

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I bet at least one of you reading this didn’t know it before you read it here:-
Hyperlinks in a Word2003 document are totally unlike fat earthworms under the shovel or toads under the plough.
If you cut them in half, both sides stay alive!

My text cursor is partway along the hyperlink.
When I tap the <Ctrl-Enter> key, I end up with TWO hyperlinks, one each side of a Page Break.
Both hyperlinks now point to the same target “T:\Pers\People\Jamie Best\PDFs\” and both hyperlinks jump to that folder.
Just thought you’d like to know.
Bonus points if you can dream up a rational (sane) use for this facility.
Cheers
Chris

You don't end up with two hyperlinks. You still have one hyperlink, but the display text of that single hyperlink includes a page break (which is just another character, Chr(12) to be precise).
Best wishes,
Hans

Zero bonus points for me! A limitation caused by splitting the link is that whenever you press the ENTER key between the two parts, it jumps to the link. :hairout:

Guess what will happen anytime anything causes Word to refresh the document's field display...

Well, yes. Given Hans's explanation, though, I could see a use for this. Suppose that having split the link with Ctrl-Enter then the first part of the link, on page1, could be augmented with a series of phrase in language1, and the part of the link on the next page could be augmented with phrases in languageNEXT.
Right?
Then whichever phrase you <Enter>ed on, you would be taken to the target of the hyperlink.

Hi Paul.
I guessed for about two seconds, then gave up and made a split hyperlink.

Both parts took me to the document, then I used Ctrl-A to select all, <F9> to update fields, and both parts of the updated hyperlink worked as before.
Obviously I'm missing something here, but it isn't obvious to me ...
Thanks
Chris

Paul probably expected the break to disappear, but as you have found that doesn't happen...
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks Hans (but I'll wait for Paul).
A hard-pagebreak, like a hard-anything, ought not never to be replaced automatically, right?
If the user has made a manual change, that manual change should not be tampered with, even by Microsoft Word.

That is indeed what I expected to happen - just as it would with any other field's result. It seems the hyperlink field is an anomaly.

I am beginning to think that practically everything in Word2003 is an anomaly ... :flee:

Cheers
Chris
P.S. I should say "is or has an anomaly

Thanks, Jay, for this depressing several bits of data.

Chris
P.S. I think "this" because "several" is a singular noun. Am I correct?

Well, my understanding is that several is an example of a subject of a verb, as is a noun.
