What is the most current version of Office? How long has it been since release? What is covered versus the previous version(?)?

There are two branches:

The most recent "perpetual license" (one-time buy) version is Office 2019. See What's New in Office 2019. It does get bug fixes and security updates, but no feature updates.

The subscription version (pay a monthly or yearly fee) is now called Microsoft 365. Although its core is the same as Office 2019, it gets new features regularly in addition to bug fixes and security updates. See What's new in Microsoft 365.
Best wishes,
Hans

Would 2019 be able to download import a MS Edge web file?

ETA Would my .xls files be ok? Or would they all have to be converted?

Downloading is not a feature of Office, but a browser function.

As far as I know, Excel 2019 still uses Internet Explorer for web queries, even if you use another browser as default browser.

What do you mean by "MS Edge web file"?

The web pages are based on the HTML formats, but if you are downloading a excel file that is being stored at a web sit, then it is just a excel file.

What issues are you having with these files?

Importing from a web format. My Excel default web is IE(s) and none will properly open a current web address for any import.

ETA As a matter of fact the little import progress bar loads about half way and then stalls. This forces me to shut it down manually before I am able to do anything within Excel. Further my goal was to code this loading and have it done within a function. If you see anyway that I might solve my dilemma, I would appreciate the help. the address to download from is

So, there are four groups and within each are three options.
Then there are several options within each of the 12 above.
What and which file type are you downloading?

Looking for only VIX,
From there I need only 4 numbers
Last, Open, High, Low.
I'm not downloading any file, just attempting to import, using code, those four numbers into a spreadsheet at todays date which has been already entered into the spreadsheet.
My Excel has only IE(s) as default web import and manually attempting that only loads about 50% and freezes. I then MUST exit Excel and start over.
The only possible solution is to got to HTML and find the numbers required and attempt to code in finding those numbers and placing them into the spreadsheet at the appropriate cells. I do this everyday and that is why I have it running code. There are other data that go into the spreadsheet, but that code still works. CBOE changed the VIX data presentation mid Dec relegating that piece of code void.

Microsoft 365 (the subscription version, which gets update features, unlike the one-time-purchase Office 2019) can do this without web apps or other add-ins. The key to the feature is a new data type, Stock, which can pull data about listed stocks using internal code. I have the latest version of Excel
About Excel.jpg
but I don't see the Data Types group on the Data ribbon. Do I have to enable it in some way?

Replying to my own observation. I had been logged out of my Microsoft account when I last ran ccleaner, and had to log back in again to enable this.

Ah, that would do it.

The new data types Stock and Geography were released in June 2020, with Version 2005 (Build 12827.20268).

Don't have 365, as I'm not paying MS monthly to use their product.

ETA Nor am I going to pay for an upgrade not knowing if the data import feature uses Edge and whether my 4000+ .xls files would work in a newer version(backwardation IIRC)
