Microsoft has been rolling out its AI assistant Copilot in Microsoft 365, the subscription version of Microsoft Office.
Around the same time, it has increased the subscription fee by almost 50%. For example, here in The Netherlands, the yearly fee went from €69.99 to €99.99.
If you like Copilot, that may be worth it.
Microsoft also quietly introduced Microsoft 365 Classic, without Copilot. It is exactly what Microsoft 365 used to be before Copilot was added, at the old fee.
Microsoft 365 Classic comes in the familiar Personal and Family editions.
Unfortunately, these are not listed on the regular Microsoft 365 page Compare all Microsoft 365 plans
If you have no need for Copilot, you might want to switch to Classic. To do so:
- Manage your Microsoft account (https://account.microsoft.com/services)
- Select Subscriptions on the left hand side.
- Click on your Microsoft 365 account, then click Manage.
- Click 'Cancel subscription' (don't worry!)
- You should be offered to switch to Microsoft 365 Classic.
- You won't be billed yet. The fee will become effective at the next regular payment date.

Re: Microsoft 365 Classic without Copilot
It's clear that they don't want to encourage users to switch!
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks for this. I have sent a link to your post to my 'account manager', i.e. my eldest son.

Hans
You are a genius! (we all knew that, anyway). How do you sniff these things out?
Thank you so much for this. For what I use of Office 365, Copilot was becoming a nuisance e.g. interfering with Word.
Have switched back to Classic already.
Thanks, again.

Thanks Hans,
I don't believe for a moment they won't continue offering that odious little icon - not in Word but still at the beginning of every blank line in OneNote, Excel, and I hear obstructively in Presentations. But at least I don't have to pay for it! To celebrate, I'm doin' the Banana Dance!
Yay!

"Hmm. What does this button do?" Said everyone before being ejected from a car, blown up, or deleting all the data from the mainframe.
