Cannot launch Word or Outlook

I turned on my computer today and found it had not been properly shut down. I assume some kind of Windows Update forced it to shut down, or maybe there was some other kind of issue. When I turned it on and logged in, I tried launching Word and Outlook. Neither one would launch. I tried in both Safe Mode and regular mode. Neither worked. I tried restarting several times, but that did not help. I tried running a Quick Repair, but these programs still will not launch.

What caused this issue and how can I overcome it?

It's impossible for us to know what caused this. You'll probably have to reinstall Office.

I just tried running an Online Repair. I understand that uninstalls and reinstalls Office. It did not resolve the issue.

Is it safe to run check disk / chkdsk on a SSD c: drive? The Internet seems conflicted, with some sources saying it is safe and others saying it can render the system unbootable.

According to Is It Safe To Run CHKDSK On An SSD?, and personal experience, you shouldn't have a problem, but if you don't want to risk it, don't!

It's probably too late now but I only read this now.
There is an Office fixer program and Microsoft lets you download it. It is named Sara and resolves multiple issues. Did you ever hear of it?
