Character Map

Post by BobH »

I cannot find a character that I sometimes need in the Win 7 Character Map. It is the inverted question mark used in written Spanish to precede interrogatory sentences.

I finally found the character in the Arial font, but I still would like to know the ASCII code for it.

Does anyone know the ASCII code for this character (or maybe tell me where to find it in the Character Map)? I know that I have used it before but cannot seem to find it in the fonts I most often use.

 :chocciebar: :thankyou:

Hi Bob,

It is Ascii Code: 168
Use the ALT+168 keyboard combination.

For more, see here...

My method of finding odd characters is to open up Word > Insert Symbol (Alt+i then s) and look for it there.

This gives a code of 191, but you need to add a zero and enter Alt + 0191 (and use the numeric keyboard).

The shortcut key shown had me flumoxed for a while until I realised I also need to press the shift key to get '?'...

Noble British keyboards have the Alt Gr key at the right side of the space bar, where most other people have a second Alt key. Alt Gr is the equivalent of Ctrl+Alt, and can be used instead of Ctrl+Alt to produce a couple of symbols like € (Alt Gr+4) and another variant of split-vertical-bar ¦ (Alt Gr+`, back-quote). It would have saved all that pressing of three keys when we were going to get the euro!

Well, I never knew that (thought the key might be for some obscure Microsoft/Windows requirement!!!). Thanks John, useful info :clapping:

Will Alt+Gr 4 be disabled after the Brexit?
Best wishes,

Currently, I would suspect that Microsoft is capable of almost anything... :hairout:

I know little of the particulars of BREXIT.

If you need to vent your spleen or praise, PM me and raise my awareness, Stuart!
