Post by Michael Abrams »

What setting do I use to eliminate the top portion of the desktop? (The portion above the toolbar - just OCD on my part but I forgot what setting that is.

Your screen shot shows Excel, not you desktop. Are you actually asking how do you run Excel in full screen mode?

If so try this link:

I know this is anal-retentive, but if you look at this print screen, I have Excel in Full Window, but there is still the desktop shoiwng at the top.

This is in every application.

Before they changed my PC, I did not see 'desktop' when in any application.

That is a Windows Personalization.

Minimise all windows to get to your desktop
Right click the desktop and choose Personalize
Click on the icon at the bottom called Window Color
Deactivate the Transparency check box

It seems a registry hack is necessary for that.
It looks simple enough, but as usual...its best to backup your registry before tampering...

Here is the info to get the menu bar above the address bar...

This article has the same steps (but also the reverse; to "undo" your actions).

Rudi

I assume my IT Dept disallows something because I get to WebBroswer but then there is no "ITBar7Position"
only Height and Layout.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001

I think I will leave this one alone !

Thanks Rudi !

I suspect it is a key that needs to be created if its not there.

However, you do not need to navigate the registry if you just use Notepad as in the instructions. Saving the notepad as a .reg file will auto update the registry with this key and value.

No problem though if you are uncomfortable in doing it.

You can create a new DWORD value named ITBar7Position and set its value to 1, or you can create a text file with extension .reg, as described in both articles, and open (double-click) the .reg file. This will create the ITBar7Position value for you.
Best wishes,
Hans

One last nuisance - where is the setting to get rid of the stuff above the taskbar.

Thank you - Michael

This is a feature of Windows Explorer: the Details Pane.
In Windows Explorer, click on Organize > Layout, then click to deselect Details Pane.
Best wishes,

Thank you HansV - I am not sure if I love it when it's that simple or hate that I couldn't figure it out myself - I did try various clickings, but obviously not the right one.

I am good for now.

Thanks again !
