Toggle function keys

Post by jmt356 »

Currently, my function keys perform the functions of their corresponding icons (e.g.: f2: dim screen; f3 brighten screen). How can I toggle them so they perform their normal functions? For example, rather than have to press fn + f5 in order to refresh IE, I want to simply press f5.

JMT

Is this a laptop?

Depending on the make/model, there may be a method such as with HP laptops.

Does your keyboard have an F Lock key? If so, press that.

It's a laptop. It probably means there isn't an F Lock key, right? I don't see one.

I think it's through BIOS setup.

Yes, you'll probably need to change a BIOS setting. In addition to Leif's link, here's another one for HP laptops:
Disable The Fn + Function Key Combination on Certain Models

I confirm what Leif and Hans say. On my HP laptop I had to get into the BIOS to change the function key operation.

Then, I found twice in the short three months I've had mine, HP online support offered BIOS updates to me and I allowed them both with my fingers crossed. No sweat... their update process worked like a charm, except that it reverted BIOS settings back to original and I had to change the function key thing again.

Is there a way to toggle the fn key using the keyboard of a Lenovo ThinkPad? Or does it need to be done through BIOS?

Fn+Esc should work on a Thinkpad.

For future reference, here is the F-Lock key on a DELL laptop.
Cheers, Chris

As usual, Google tends to have some answers, e.g.

Hans: The fn + Esc keyboard shortcut worked .
Leif: There is no Fn or function keys tab in my Keyboard Properties window in Control Panel | Keyboard.
