Account Question

Hello, What type of account is outlook.com & hotmail.com I thought they were only email accounts. BUT I have a Gmail.com with the same username, but different passwords. One is for my Microsoft Account that I use to log in to my pc. The other is my gmail account.
I have used that method since XP days. Can you throw any light on this?

A Gmail, Outlook.com and Hotmail.com are all much more than an email account.

An Outlook.com and Hotmail.com account are Microsoft accounts that you can use to access all kinds of Microsoft services, and a Gmail account is a Google account that you can use to access all kinds of Google services.

While it is not required to use an Outlook.com or Hotmail.com account to log in to Windows, Microsoft very strongly pushes users in that direction.
