When Finished
Hi Folks, I have had my Laptop set to 'Shutdown' by closing the lid. I have now started the method in my image. Which one do you think is best? My Laptop can be very slow in starting from 'Off' or using the 'Restart' after installing updates.

Re: When Finished
Hi Hans, the reason I posed the question was to see if there was any difference in the methods. One time after updates were finished being downloaded/installed, I clicked the restart button in my image but it did not finish the install completely as the restart button in Settings Windows Update does.

Re: When Finished
After posting the above, I checked my power settings, Shut Down was selected for pressing the Power Button. Pressed it 3 times, nothing happened.

Re: When Finished
Hi Roderunner. Define "best"!
When I was using public WiFi (libraries, coffee shops etc) I had close the lid and anything else available ("inactive for five minutes" sort of thing) shut down the laptop because, with an encrypted data drive I figured that the worst that could happen is that a thief would win a piece of hardware.
Now that I am in a secure location (a house where people wander it at all hours of the day - hah hah!) I am feeling more secure, so I have to manually issue a Shutdown.bat to power off - my equivalent of Hans's pressing the power key.
"Best" for you will depend on your situation, surely. If you have a corporate laptop with corporate data, you might want to have the laptop

Cheers, Chris

Re: When Finished
Hi Chris, I thought the 3 methods of powering off my one man at home alone in a little village personal pc had different properties when used, that were causing my slow to start & restart minor problem. I am now aware they all do the same and my restart time without having to complete updates installation is still over 5 minutes.
P.S. Last time i tried, the power button shutdown my laptop.

Re: When Finished
Hi George,
If your laptop has a spinning-disk hard drive, that may be why it takes so long to restart. Unless the laptop is already due to be retired for other reasons, it's worth spending about USD60 to 80 for a solid-state drive to replace the hard drive. The access time for an SSD can be up to 10 times faster than for an HDD of the same capacity. For sample prices, look at NewEgg.com.
I have a 10-year-old Toshiba laptop that was taking half of forever to boot up. After I replaced the HDD with an SSD, it now takes about 10 seconds. The hardest part of the replacement process is getting the case open by popping the plastic hooks that fasten the keyboard panel to the bottom of the case. The wiring and connector are the same for both kinds of drives. (Note: Look only at the SATA type of SSD. You don't want an M.2 drive, the kind on a little circuit board, because your laptop probably doesn't have anywhere to plug it in.)

Re: When Finished
Hi Jay, I never got an email notification of your reply.
My laptop is only about 18 months old and has been slow from day 1.
During this time, I have learnt more on the workings of a Win 10 pc and it is getting less slow but not everytime I use it.
Most of my time is spent using my Win 7 pc playing with my music files. It has been unplugged from the internet.

Have you not been told many times that the notifications from The Lounge are not reliable?
Yes, but you haven't said if your laptop has a traditional hard disk or if it has a solid state drive.Roderunner wrote: ↑12 Jul 2022, 08:06My laptop is only about 18 months old and has been slow from day 1.
