External backup

Am about to backup files to external drive for first time using Windows 8 File History. After the initial backup, can I unplug the drive and then plug it back, in say 2 weeks, to get most recent backups/edits. In other words, can I run it manually or do I have to keep it permanently plugged in?

You may unplug it. I've left mine unplugged for a couple of months when I've been out of town. It picks back up when I plug it in.
