Adding symbol or similar to File / Folder name
Is there any way a symbol or similar can be added to a folder / file name as a means of quickly identifying it as having been (eg) edited or - in the case of it being a video or audio - burnt to disc? Thanks Dave.

Re: Adding symbol or similar to File / Folder name
One can edit the icon on a folder, but I don't believe that symbols are allowed in a file name. (See image below)
You could just add a suffix or prefix to the filename; for eg: My document (edit).docx or My Document (final).docx.

Thanks Rudi........I would have liked to use a tick but no luck so I've just discovered that one can use e.g. (M ) or [M ] which -for me - indicates a file/folder has been forwarded to a friend called Mike. Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave,
If it's just a check mark you want, you could try this...
In the save as dialog of the application, in the file name box, type the name of the file and then punch in the ascii code (ALT+251)
This will give you a check mark which is valid in file names.
It will look like this: Test √.docx

I have moved this thread from the Word forum to Windows General as it seems more appropriate here.

Sorry but the pedant in me can't let you get away with that. It's not a check mark it's a square root sign.Rudi wrote:This will give you a check mark which is valid in file names

Re: Adding symbol or similar to File / Folder name
So, is there a 'check mark' and, if so, what does it look like?

Check mark: ✓
Square root: √
The check mark is not available in the default font used by Windows.

Re: Adding symbol or similar to File / Folder name
Ken... Agreed, but it is the closest ascii code I could find that looks similar.
Bob... I did not see any check mark in the ascii tables.
Hans... Is that check mark an ascii character? If so, what is its keyboard code?

The check mark is hexadecimal 2713 = decimal 10003. It's available in Arial Unicode MS.

Re: Adding symbol or similar to File / Folder name
If it's not available in the fonts used by Windows, it could not then be used in the Folder / File names, so the closest option is still our hip to be square root.

Re: Adding symbol or similar to File / Folder name
Yep.there is a check mark in Wingdings [see below] but I tried typing Alt+ 252 (not(251) and the computer just pinged in disapproval so how does one type an asci code character? (eg) The shortcut key for the square root sign is 221A,AltX; how does one type that combination? As a keyboard shortcut for inserting a "check mark" in a Word doc I have simply assigned Alt + T thus not needing to remember asci codes. But it can't be added to a file name! Cheers Dave.

Re: Adding symbol or similar to File / Folder name
Wingding characters cannot be used in folder and file naming. You are limited (AFAIK) to the ascii characters.
To type the square root sign, I hold down ALT and on the numeric keypad I type 251.
