My reading of Woody's piece on InfoWorld (i.e. the link Joe gave) is that is his view after he got the answer from MS he was waiting for (mentioned in the link I gave). In other words, if you are NOT part of the CEIP then these updates (regardless of their description as optional or important) are benign.

Do others agree with this interpretation of have I missed something and in fact I need to get a tinfoil hat?

Sounds OK to me. I ended up deleting all four KBs and have had no obvious problems without them.
