directory in text

Post by dasadler »

Back in the DOS days, I could do a directory listing and output it to a print or text file. How can I do that in Windows? I would like to get a list of files so I can copy/paste into a document.

Seems to be a lot of these utilities out there but you might give this one a try.

Karen's Directory Printer is another that springs to mind. In fact, Karen has quite a few very useful utilities on her site.

Thanks to everyone. At the end of the day I thought I would try doing it the old way from the command line and it worked so I was able to get what I needed without installing another program. I just went to DOS, changed to the appropriate directory and typed dir>dir.txt

The text file dir.txt is easily manipulated.

I was looking for something similar...

(Win 7, Office 2007)

I need a text file of the directory with another attribute than size, I need the number of pages.

I have to ftp imaged documents a couple times a week and they want to know how many pages are being sent. Of course the amount varies file to file, but day to day the file count is around 200 and that's a lot of adding :flee:

I can select the page count in Windows Explorer and it displays, but I cannot copy and past as text, the status bar doesn't total the page count, and the above Dir>Dir.txt doesn't capture the page count either.

any ideas greatly appreciated :thankyou:

The number of pages in an imaged document is a "custom" property, so I'm not sure that standard directory printers or listers will include it. You may need a custom application. But hopefully someone will know of an existing one.
Best wishes,
Hans

Can you clarify what you mean by an 'imaged document'?
Are they all a specific file type - e.g. .doc?

So far all the files are .tif, though it's possible a .pdf may show up now and again...

Does Tiff and PDF Page Counter 1.0.0.0 do what you want?

Just for the record, and in case anyone has a requirement for page-counts with Office documents, I had got as far as finding
The Dsofile.dll files lets you edit Office document properties when you do not have Office installed
before seeing only TIF and PDF files were involved
