My computer occasionally gets very slow. I launch the Task Manager to see if there are any programs running in the background, but under Applications, all I find are the visible programs.
The problem is usually solved by restarting the computer. However, is there a way to stop the problem to begin with?

Take a look at the Processes tab of Task Manager, and if it has a button "Show processes from all users" (or something similar), click this button.
Click once or twice on the CPU column header until the processes are listed in descending order of CPU usage.
You should now be able to see which process or processes use a lot of CPU time.
