Server problems?

Post by viking33 »

Been experiencing problems loading the Lounge or having it time out before connecting. Started sometime late this PM and again just a few minutes ago?
Anyone else or is Verizon choking?

I've been online with only short interruptions since 9:30 UTC (4:30 EST) (I have a couple of days off work), and I haven't noticed any slowdowns.
Best wishes,
Hans

Still having them, as we speak. Have to try a few times to load pages. Must be a North American thing?

The Lounge server is in Germany. The Lounge bits have probably frozen because of the early snow...

But seriously, I'm getting timeouts on several sites in the US, so there appears to be a problem with transatlantic connections.
Best wishes,
Hans

Hate to have to call my friends at Verizon. I think they shudder at the mere mention of my name. ( from past problems with them ) :innocent: :flee:

That would account for the fact that I have not seen any problems with the lounge today.

 that sounds like a good conspiracy theory, after all, said website has been removed from Amazon servers and moved to Europe.

Ahem!
Hans, given your proclivity to swing into action on this Lounge, your "couple of days off work" and consequent action on the Lounge probably accounts for the slowdown that the rest of us notice

WOW, it's getting WORSE. Just tried switching back to IE with same timeouts.
Contacted Verizon but of course, they claim all is purring along fine?

Hmmm, here in "mid-America I've not had any problems getting to The Lounge. But then again, my visitations are fewer and more far between then they used to be, so I'm probably not a good "tester."

But I'm usually in and out several time each day and haven't had any trouble. Mebbe my "Germanic" name gets me priority to the German server... :innocent: :flee:

Bed now...

Bob, it's not necessarily Verizon's fault. I seriously think there is a problem with some (not all) of the transatlantic data transport. All day yesterday, while I never noticed any slowdown in Eileen's Lounge, the Microsoft Answers forums loaded very slowly for me, with frequent errors. Yet others didn't have any problem with those.
Best wishes,
Hans

You could be right, Hans but it seems like I'm always getting the problem ones.
I wonder if there is ANY way to inform WHOMEVER about this? ( I would think that "they" should be aware of it by now )
I tried pinging the Lounge a few times and the average ping time was a whopping 130+ms, along with a timeout!

You could try setting a different server address - when I had problems with timeouts some time ago, I switched to Google Public DNS and it has worked well for me.

Hans

Have you kept using the Google Public DNS since then?
Might give it try since this is getting bad.

Yes, I'm still using Google Public DNS.

But the slowdown and timeouts might have to do with the WikiLeaks affair - I wasn't entirely joking higher up in this thread. The last few days people or organizations that don't like WikeLeaks have been executing massive denial of service attacks on the site - bombarding it with billions of page requests. This may well have a negative effect on other internet traffic.
Best wishes,
Hans
