I searched for an answer to this question and checked FAQ but didn't find one.
I know that an avatar must not exceed 90 pixels in width and has equivalent height limits and not exceed a fixed file size (which amount escapes me as I type). Are there similar dimension and file size limits for attached images? If so, what are they?
I have a file less than 900 pixels wide that is 465kb that is being rejected as being too large, but I don't know if it is file size or dimension that is the problem.

Re: Maximum Attachment Image File Size?
The maximum file size for an attachment is 250 KB.
There is no specific limit for the image size of an image attachment, but the file size limit will restrict image size in most situations.

Re: Maximum Attachment Image File Size?
Thank you, Mr. V.
Would a suggestion to put that information in FAQ be out of line?
I followed the link and read the thread. Somewhere in there someone stated that Irfanview would allow a user to choose the file size and the software would make adjustments required. I have Irfanview v. 4.57 and cannot find such an option. Can anyone tell me if this is possible and if so how to do it?

Re: Maximum Attachment Image File Size?
In outline, open IrfanView v4.57 or lower and look on the File menu for the entry called 'Save for Web'. If you haven't got that entry it might be that you haven't installed any IrfanView plugins, they are available from the same source as the main IrfanView installer, here:
https://www.fosshub.com/IrfanView-old.html
Installing them is trivial, download the .exe and run it. Job done.

Re: Maximum Attachment Image File Size?
I downloaded the V. 4.57 plugins from the link and installed them, yet when I try Save for Web, I get this error.
