Our SSL security certificate has expired. We applied for a new one some days ago, but the web hosting company are being a bit slow about installing it.

Until the new security certificate is applied, couldn't the intended user be given a message like "Yes, we know!"?

The warning is generated by your browser, not by us...

True, but some reassurance and a post-browser-warning brief immediate explanation would be a nice thought!
