_.. I am curious because I have no idea at all about the mechanics behind a “forum on a server” , and I sometimes wondered about using a forum software myself as a form of well structured personal Blog site.
I was offered an existing forum to “buy” recently. I liked the idea but had not the faintest idea how to organise that.
You should never ask advice of anyone trying to sell you something, ( especially when, in this case, the current forum owner recently set a Bot to give the impression of more views on the site) , so I have been at a bit of a loss of finding any impartial info on how such a thing actually works.. and / or how to actually organise it..
So for example, what does “moving to a new server “ actually mean. Does one of the Admins copy a lot of stuff to disks, USBs and take them around to another Admin’s house, and then over a Few Beers they try to set up the forum on the server in his bedroom?

The forum runs on hardware in a big datacentre, where we pay for use of a virtual server. We are moving to a different service provider, as the previous one wanted to charge us extra for the bandwidth we use, and this one is much cheaper, and easier to work with.

Any idea how long The Lounge will be down? A few hours? A few days?
Thanks,

The transfer will be done for us by the new hosting company, not by ourselves, so we don't know exactly. But it shouldn't take more than a day.
Best wishes,
Hans

Will we use the same log in credentials, etc.? Is there anything we should prepare for before the "big move"? :)

You'll keep the same username, password, post count etc. You don't have to do anything.
Best wishes,
Hans

I have the Admin's email so that should work! I used to exchange emails with Big Al but he's long gone. And then there is Chris who is under 100 feet of snow (exaggeration) and perhaps doesn't realize that we are shifting servers. John of England is always helpful as well! Hopefully - it all happens without any hiccups!Doc.AElstein wrote:maybe exchange a few email addresses with people , .. just incase of the worst?.Skitterbug wrote:.... In the meantime - Happy Easter!
