Oh, that's weird. There certainly isn't a massive amount of traffic on the server (or this part of it).

Just before I successfully logged in (after having had to reenter my credentials) the lounge appeared inaccessible briefly.

Unfortunately we have absolutely no idea what is causing this. We do know that:
  • It affects individual users, not everyone at the same time
  • Sometimes you are able to log in from a different device and then the issue clears, other times it affects all devices
  • Sometimes you can log in by switching from http: to https: or vice-versa, other times this makes no difference
  • It can last anything from a few minutes to 12 hours or more
Unfortunately, none of the current admins is an expert in the phpBB software that the lounge uses, so we haven't been able to get any further yet.

If anyone notices any helpful patterns then please do share them here, as more information might help us to identify a cause.

Since I switched over to https: I haven't had any more log in problems? Strange!

This time I was in the middle of a session when I was logged out. I couldn't log back in immediately, but it was ok about 15 minutes later.

I switched over to https after Viking Bob mentioned it back on December 14th. The lounge experience has been stable for me ever since.

Glad to hear it but that's not my experience. I got dumped out again yesterday evening (UK time) but using https didn't help. Nothing let me back in on my Win 10 box. I got in again briefly by switching to my Win 7 netbook but for less than five minutes and then I was logged out again. I'm at work at the moment. I'll see what happens from home in a few hours time.

In case it helps, I was booted off yesterday sometime before 1600 hrs US CST and could not log in. I stopped trying after 4 failed attempts and did not log in until just a minute ago.

Thus far, I've been avoiding the log in/out problem since using the secure URL BUT I have noticed a new and unusual change.
If I make a post and then click the "submit" button, the new post displays itself in immense type font, then if I click the submit again, it appears to be the proper size and appearance?

"Rename" Scuttlebutt?

Are we going to have a Scuttlebutt "Scexit" vs "remane" controversy?

Edit: when I pressed the submit button for this post, a bunch of error message text appeared briefly at the top of the page before disappearing. I haven't seen this happen ever before, but it appeared consistently when I edited this post:

FWIW I use only the https login. It has not resolved issues for this Bob.

Yep, our version of the forum software isn't 100% compatible with https, so you get a warning each time you post. It doesn't prevent you from posting though.
Best wishes,
Hans

Just to confirm that I have also experienced most of the issues described. Mostly the logging in/posting difficulties are short lived so its no big deal, for me at least.
I have switched to using the secure link now ... see if there are improvements.

Using https has not made me immune to the malady that is plaguing the lounge. I have again begun to experience some of the problems mentioned above.

Paul
