Is it possible or are there plans to modify the board index to display only a users selected forums, rather than all forums?
Like the Favorites in the good old board?

You can display "Watched forums" in your User Control Panel. That's about the nearest you can get.
To add a forum to the watched forums you click "subscribe forum" when you are viewing the forum index (in my subsilver2 skin this is at the top left).

Doesn't that mean that you will get an email for every post that's made in a forum you subscribe to?

Yep.
Our forum software doesn't have a feature that's equivalent to the Favorite Forums in Woody's Lounge before February 2009.
