How do I put a ToC on the same page as a table
Trying to insert a ToC on the same page just in front of the first page of a multi page table.
Pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter gives a new line, but on a new page in front of the table.

Re: How do I put a ToC on the same page as a table
I just tried this on a newly created file with a long, empty, table and it worked fine. Do you have any paragraph formatting such as "Keep lines together" or "Keep with next"? Do you have any table row formatting such as "Allow row to break across pages"?

Re: How do I put a ToC on the same page as a table
Interesting Stuart, danged if I can get it to do that.
Keep lines together" or "Keep with next" are both on. Both set with new lines and first few table lines selected.
Allow row to break across pages is off. (Don't want rows to break).
I have the ToC split into 4 columns, maybe that is messing things up. Each row of the ToC is just a letter of the alphabet so I can navigate to points inside the table quickly.
Tried another approach - reduce the page size of the ToC to 8 cm, so that the ToC is just above the table. Unfortunately, even with 'apply to selected sections' selected, additional blank pages are inserted. I just can't win.
I have attached a version with all data deleted.

Your document requires a password to open.
Without looking, though, both column changes and page size changes involve section breaks which complicates everything.
You could put a TOC inside a table cell.

Re: How do I put a ToC on the same page as a table
In the first place you could try clearing all the "Keep lines together" and "Keep with next" attributes to see if this is your issue. That is a quick thing to do and if it resolves the issue then you can reapply it more carefully.

Forgot about the password. Here it is without pword.
The doc initially had those items cleared, I added them to see if it would make a diff.

It's what StuartR suggested.
Click anywhere in the table.
With Num Lock off, press Alt+5 on the numeric keypad to select the entire table.
Click the arrow in the lower right corner of the Paragraph goup of the Home tab of the ribbon.
Activate the Line and Page Breaks tab of the Paragraph dialog.
Click the 'Keep with next' check box until it's clear.
Click OK.

Re: How do I put a ToC on the same page as a table
Well I'll be!
It is now exactly how I want it.
HUGE thanks to Stuart and Hans.
Any clues as to how to speed up the delay when one of the ToC lines is Ctrl clicked?
Takes about 10 seconds for it to move.

No idea - it's instantaneous on my PC (Windows 10 20H2, Office 2019).
Best wishes,

Re: How do I put a ToC on the same page as a table
I went through the first couple of letters and changed the paragraph formatting for entire rows to remove "Keep with next" and "Keep Lines Together" settings. Works fine. Each cell in a row can have paragraph formatting that may control.
The rows with the letters still have the "Keep with next" formatting.
Here is a temporary link to the changed file: deleteme Sample.docx
I also fiddled with the columns and the TOC1 style tab format.
Unless you have a strong reason to have a single table, I would recommend a separate table for each letter. Put the letters outside of the Tables.
Also, look at: Why you should use the Built-In Heading styles by Shauna Kelly

Re: How do I put a ToC on the same page as a table
Thanks Charles, however as above I already got the layout going perfectly (except for the delay).
I removed all the line and page breaks from the whole doc and it made no diff to the delay.
Now to the delay: your version is instantaneous, my version of Sample.docx still takes over 10 seconds, which makes it slower than scrolling manually. I downloaded your version. I will now try to cut & paste all my data rows. Hopefully it will still be instantaneous.
Thanks again.

Dang!
Charles, I downloaded your version and when I opened it, the delay was still there. Weird as using it in your link was instantaneous.
Clearly something is wrong with my Word 2010.
Thanks anyway.

Re: How do I put a ToC on the same page as a table
My Word has been loggy of late, especially with TOCs.
Office 365.
I often have to click in a TOC, wait, then I can update or Right-Click, but the delay is noticeable.

Thanks Charles. Guess I'm expecting too much from my 11 year old Word 2010.

Re: How do I put a ToC on the same page as a table
Do not be in a hurry to "upgrade." IMO Word 2010 is the Word 2003 of the ribbon versions. Very responsive with a good interface. Later versions have some nice stuff. I like the collapsing text in print view, for instance, but other things are not, IMO, improvements.

Re: How do I put a ToC on the same page as a table
Thanks Charles, sorry for the delay, I was very busy refitting stuff to our caravan before going away for a long Easter break.
I would love to update to a later version of Office, but MicroShaft in their infinite wisdom removed some BIG features from Access that make my years of programming and improving inoperative. So I am stuck forever in the Office 2010 world.

Not a bad place to be.
Beats being stuck in Office 2007 or 2000. At least, in Word, you still can make use of Text Boundaries!
