At the time of typing, "Help -> About Firefox" says "77.0.1 (64-bit) Firefox is up to date", so no doubt the delights of v78.0 await me...!

Usually, selecting Help > About Firefox auto-updates immediately on the official release date. I don't know why it doesn't this time...
Best wishes,
Hans

Hello John, also Hans (grin).
I too was mystified over this.
My Options doesn't show a checkbox for auto-download (I have changed my views on automatic updates).

Is there anything to this business of being a special person, i.e. a Release Channel user?

Thanks
Chris

Firefox 78.0 is available for download from Download Firefox, but for reasons unknown to me it is currently not offered as an automatic update...
Best wishes,
Hans

so you are NOT omnipotent! (grin).

I ran the "update" option, but Help About still said 77.x. I exited FF, reloaded, still at 77.
So I went to Options and Lo and behold:

I still see exactly what Stuart sees despite asking seven times, rebooting once and not wearing a red shirt.

It appears that 78.0 contains a bug. Version 78.0.1 will be released soon.

You'd think by now that all the updating they do, they could get it right.

Version 78.0.1 is now available through the internal update mechanism.

See Version 78.0.1, first offered to Release channel users on July 1, 2020

I loved the line that said
Mozilla paused the rollout of the new stable version of the Firefox web browser that it released yesterday
This is clearly a meaning of the word stable with which I was not previously familiar

Would you not think that even a minimal amount of testing of a new browser version would show the unavailability of search engines?! :hairout:

At this rate Mozilla Firefox will be at version 2004 in no time at all ...
