Warning re Canon products

Post by Peter Kinross »

The latest Win 10 update broke my newish Canon DR-225 scanner. Unfortunately my new product warranty finished on June 2, less than 1 month ago. Now dear old Canon refuse to help in any way whatsoever. Well that is apart from directing me to their current outdated drivers, that I had already tried. I downloaded a heap of their current (and old) drivers, none worked. With all other manufacturers that I am aware of, driver maintenance is a given - not so much with Canon.
To say that this is infuriating is an understatement.
I did mention to them that I would have no choice but to warn my fellow computer users, but they didn't seem to care. Strange, but there it is.
So here is the warning: if you want a product manufacturer who will keep their product going, perhaps it is best not to look at Canon.
I'm now shopping for a Brother scanner, unless any of you loungers have any other brand suggestions.
Anyone want a reasonably new canon scanner or a small boat anchor? Just pick it up from my rubbish bin.

I have no wisdom that might help you but for the sake of clarity, was it a 'quality' update, as in the latest monthly update for whatever version of Win 10 (1803/1809/1903) you are on? Or was it a 'feature' update, as in your Win version incremented from e.g. 1803-->1809 / 1809-->1903 / etc. that caused the problem?

A previous Windows 10 update disabled the scanning function of my HP multifunction printer. This was because the printer relied on SMB1 protocol to connect to the computer, and Windows had intentionally disabled this - because it is insecure and was used in many attacks including Wannacry.

I have temporarily re-enabled SMB1 on one of my PCs, but this could enable ransomware to spread on my home network. When I run out of printer ink I shall replace the printer and disable SMB1 again.

How to enable/disable SMBv1 in Windows 10

In which case may be I can offer some thing constructive after all.

I have an Epson printer/scanner, this one:
https://www.epson.co.uk/products/printe ... oto-xp-960
I've had it for a while now, as in since before I switched from Win XP to Win 10 in 2017 so it's survived transitions from Win XP to Win 10 1709 and then to my current version of Win 10 1803. That longevity might suggest that Epson hardware is less prone to being rendered redundant by a Win update than other offerings.

Having said that of course that means I've just put the kiss of death on my device and it to will die when MS push my machine from Win 10 1803 to Win 10 1903 sometime soon.

Thanks guys. Stuck, I have no idea what sort of an update it was, but it took a few hours to complete.
The win version I now have is version 1903 (OS Build 18362.207).
How do I check if the scanner relies on SMB1?
I have 4 other scanners (I'm greedy), I have only tested the Brother MFP and it works fine. Not really greedy, they all have a purpose. 1 is part of my emergency inkjet printer and is never used and would be far too slow doing multi page duplex scanning, 1 is a very old flatbed, 1 is part of my Brother laser MFP, and does a reasonable job of multi page duplex scanning, 1 is a specialist negative/slide scanner, that is disconnected as I have finished scanning all my negatives. The Canon was very good at multi page duplex scanning - bummer.
I have narrowed my choice to the front runner, an AVISION AV220 D2+ or an Epson B11B226501 Workforce DS-530.
The AVision is only A$200, the Epson is over twice that, but with better specs. Just waiting on a reply to my question to the Avision retailer.
But more than willing to look at anything else except a canon. And / or to listen to any experiences you guys or guyesses have had.

As an aside, what make/model? I've got Nikon Coolscan V ED (yes, it works on 64 bit Win 10, providing you know the right magic spell) If you've done all yours, would you like to start on thousands and thousands of slides I've got?

I had > 4,000 negs. Due to storing degradation, most of them required extensive fixing in Photoshop. By extensive, I mean an average of 1 - 1 1/2 hours each. Thus it took me about 5 years of spare time. But now it's done. My advice is to get to it ASAP. The main degradation was what I guess was a sort of mould that gave 1,000s and 1,000s of tiny pink spots all over most of the the negs. Glad I didn't delay the scanning any longer. My scanner was a Reflecta Crystal Scan. I really cannot speak highly enough of it, 11 out of 10.
Search for a scanner. Avision is off my list as the latest version of windows it is suitable for is Win 7. That would be out of the frying pan into the fire. Frustrating as the Epson is too expensive.
The Canon DR-C225 it will be replacing is quite small and fits easily on my desktop.

I don't think so Ken. I have an older Epson Perfection 2480 Photo scanner. It suites my limited scanning needs, but when Windows 10 was introduced (I know ..... a long time ago), there were no Windows 10 drivers for the scanner. After much searching, I read a response by one reader who had the same problem. He suggested going to the European Epson site and downloading the Windows 7 (64 bit) driver which was available there.

PERFECT! The scanner was up and functioning again. BUT, after every major Windows 10 update, the scanner was once again disabled. Reinstalling those same Windows 7 drivers was the answer, and I've simply been reinstalling them after every major Windows 10 update since then.

I guess I got lucky then as there were / still are Win 10 drivers for my Epson.

It would be quick and easy to follow the instructions I gave for enabling SMB1, then testing the printer to see if it works. If not then immediately disable SMB1 again.

FWIW my HP Laserjet 860 printer/scanner has successfully transitioned from XP to 7 to 10. I have a Canon that I haven't used for years. I'll have to connect it and see if I have the same problem as Peter.

I turned SMB1 on but the scanner still didn't work. Turned SMB1 back off.
I have been experimenting with the scanner within my Brother MFC-L8690CDW. I have got it humming, so that will become my scanner. Not quite as convenient as my desktop Canon, as I have to get out of my chair and move half a metre to insert docs - horrors.
So problem overcome - not as I wanted but life is full of compromises.
However, if anyone hears of drivers for the Canon, please let me know.

I must now eat humble pie. And darn it tastes awful.
The Canon scanner was not at fault, the usb cable I had been using for a decade with this scanner and its predecessor, had become faulty. Replaced the cable and the scanner works beautifully.
Canon even suggested changing the cable, but I thought that, as it had been going great for such a long time, that could not be the fault. What a dill, can't get more wrong than I was.
Apologies Canon.
