After giving his instructions the general left. Upon his return the next day, he found that Pete had been set free alive and well. "How could this be?" demanded the general. "It was where Pete had us stand," explained the captain of the squad.

Where did Pete tell them to stand?
Alternative answer:

He may have convinced them that if they are all pointing away from him they are actually facing him, since if they kept walking away from him, circumnavigating the world in true Spanish conquistador style, they would eventually come face-to-face with him. If their IQs were on par with their marksmanship, it just might have worked.

Last week, the local Primary school was visited by the Government School Inspector who was there to check that teachers were performing well in their respective classes.

He was very impressed with one particular teacher. The Inspector noticed that each time the class teacher asked a question, every child in the class put up their hands enthusiastically to answer it.

More surprisingly, whilst the teacher chose a different child to answer the questions each time, the answers were always correct.

Why would this be?

Holmes got up and looked out the window just in time to see three neighbourhood kids who were brothers run around a corner. Their names were John Crimson, Mark Crimson and Paul Crimson.
The next day Holmes got a note on his door that read "? Crimson. He broke your window."

Which of the three Crimson brothers should Sherlock Holmes question about the incident?

This presumably would work only in the UK and other similar anglophone countries!
Does the US call '?' a "question point" not a "question mark"?
In the same way as they say "exclamation point" rather than the more British "exclamation mark"...

I didn't see anything in the question that would indicate the gender of either the teacheror the inspector. (Re-reading the question shows the inspector referred to as "He.") Inferring from the question that the teacher and inspector are 2 different people, my guess would be . . .
Spoiler
. . . that the teacher somehow knew the date of the inspection and probably coached students on answers and their response behavio(u)r.

If the whole thing was rehearsed then

Spoiler
The children were instructed to ALL raise their hands whenever a question was asked. It did not matter whether they knew the answer or not.
If they did not know the answer, however, they would raise their LEFT hand.
If they knew the answer, they would raise their RIGHT hand.
The class teacher would choose a different child each time, but always the ones who had their RIGHT hand raised.

Unfortunately this relies on the children being able correctly to identify their handedness.
In addition, I suspect that an experienced inspector would not have been fooled for long.

When they grow up they will be asked to distinguish between 32-bit and 64-bit programs!
